Finding Peace When Things Don’t Go Your Way

Flying into Italy

Hi friend! Do you feel like you’ve been waiting on God for far too long?

Have you been questioning why he’s allowed certain things to happen?

Do you ever wish he’d speed things up?

Do you experience frustration when things don’t go the way you think they should.

Me too. More times than I can count.

So how do we find peace during those times?

Last summer my husband and I traveled to Italy and encountered some challenges along the way. Here’s something I posted to Facebook as we began our journey.

“Trying to get to Italy. Flight delayed. Back-up navigation system broken, fixed, broken again. Fixed. Boarded. 4 passengers checked luggage but didn’t re-board. Crew had to go through all luggage to remove their bags. Finally done. Pilot comes back on. Temperature gauge in right engine broken. They’ll fix it. Very rare to have two things malfunction and the issue with the baggage. Didn’t really feel comfortable flying on this plane. Prayed God would get us on a new plane if he knew it wasn’t safe to fly on this one. Pilot comes back on. Can’t fix problem. Two hours on plane. We de-board. Waiting for new plane. Thankful for God’s protection and providence. Love the adventure! At least I have a great traveling companion. News just reported storms approaching Chicago.  Exciting life we live!”

Luckily, we beat the storms and got off the ground in time. Unfortunately, there was no way to make it to our connecting flight in Germany.

When God allows things in my life I don’t understand, I have been known to get stupid and impatient. I hate to say this, but I have even been known to cry and whine.

For some reason, this time was different. What if I had cried and whined and demanded my way? What if that flight had taken off and crashed because of further mechanical difficulties?

I was actually relieved to get off that plane even though it meant more delays and a missed connection in Germany. Why can’t I do that more often? Why can’t I trust God when my life is interrupted and things don’t go as I think they should?

Trusting God. That’s where our security lies.

Here are some things to remember if you want to find peace when life doesn’t go your way:

1) God clearly sees every circumstance in our lives and knows what’s around every corner.

Because of that, he knows what we need in the current to prepare us for the future.

Why is it so hard to trust him for that?

“You chart the path ahead of me, and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment, you know where I am. You know what I am going to say before I even say it.” Psalm 139:3-4

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” Psalm 139:7-10

2) Sometimes God allows us to be in particular situations in order to develop our character and tenacity. His goal is to make us more like Christ. Very often, that happens through difficulty.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son . . .” Romans 8:28-29

3) The “thunder of God’s power” is greater than any situation we face. He is more than capable of getting us through the tough times.

“He stirs up the sea with His power and by His understanding He breaks up the storm. These are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand.” Job 26:12, 14

4) God may not always clarify why things happen, but he does promise to give us peace and the ability to keep trusting him in the middle of the struggle.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

Do you have trouble trusting God when your life is interrupted and things don’t go your way? Are you patient with God’s timing? Is it easy or hard for you to trust him to know what’s best for you?

I’m really glad you came here today, so thank you for stopping by!

Living fully, loving deeply, embracing the adventure with God . . .
