As Part of the Church are You Leading the Revolution or Just a Preener?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I’ve been running this blog for about two years now. All this time and I have rarely touched on the topic I’m most passionate about – the Church. Namely, mobilizing the body of Christ in the local church.

Taking “good” to Joplin in aftermath of tornado

Maybe it’s because I thought no one would be interested in that topic. Maybe it was because I thought it wouldn’t enrich your life as much as other topics. Today – I’m changing all that.

This excerpt from an article written by Rich Stearns in the Summer 2013 World Vision magazine really grabbed my heart this week. (The article is an excerpt from his new book, Unfinished.)

“This assignment Jesus gave to the disciples just before his ascension appears in several key New Testament passages and is generally referred to as the Great Commission. It was revolutionary in its vision.

It involved going into all the world to establish and build a different kind of world order – one that Jesus often called the kingdom of God. It was a clarion call to follow him by joining him in his mission to reconcile humankind to God’s purposes.

It was a call to action to join God in his intent to form a new kind of kingdom that would become a blessing to all nations – one based not on land, politics, power, and dominion but on God’s truth, love, forgiveness, and compassion – a kingdom within kingdoms.”

Friends, it is absolutely impossible to carry out this call by holing up in our churches preening with one other while ignoring the lost, hurting, and increasingly immoral world surging around us.

Jesus meant for us, his Church, to go out and lead this revolution . . . going into the world to reclaim and redeem the broken, wounded, and sinister places for Christ.

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:13-14

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver and gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” 1 Peter 1:18-19

“And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” 2 Corinthians 5:19-20

One of my goals with this blog has been this: To reach outside myself in an attempt to redeem a little piece of the internet (and the world) for good . . . and for God.

We literally need a gospel “revolution” in our world today. So many are confused, damaged, imprisoned in destructive behaviors, walking a path that leads to darkness, and living without hope.

You are part of the Church. Your story . . . your life . . . your individuality is all part of God’s bigger story. God has created you in a specific way with a plan for you to participate in His mission according to your unique design.

You many not be a “professional” missionary, but make no mistake. God’s mission for you is the same.

It goes beyond words. It involves all of you. It means becoming the embodiment of the gospel message as you allow Christ to live His life in and through you . . . sharing the truth of the gospel and God’s goodness, choosing to love, offering forgiveness, demonstrating compassion.

It’s time to stop sitting in the pews. It’s time to participate in God’s bigger story.

So what do you bring to the table? What are your passions, talents, and resources? How can you activate them for God’s purposes in your church – in the world? He is so good. How can you use them to shout his greatness and make his name famous?

Thank you for stopping by today!! I am so grateful for your presence here. Please come again. I’ll leave the light on for you.
