What Does It Mean to Pray According to God’s Will?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Prayers are intimate conversations with the God who rules the universe.

The God who rules the universe . . . Wow!

I love what Christ has made possible for you and me. He has opened the way for us to come near to God in prayer like a landowner who has opened the gate to a sunlit, lush green pasture with lazy trees stretching their long arms out to shade those who come in.

God wants us to come to him. He wants to hear our requests.

1 John 5:14-15 tells us:

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

Notice the super important words in this verse. He hears us when we ask “according to his will”.

What It Means to Pray According to God’s Will

1) We pray according to his will when we’re led by his spirit in prayer. God himself shows us how and what to pray. We’re led by his spirit when we abide in him, when we delight in him, when we live our lives in daily relationship with him. You can read more about this here:

2) We pray “according to his will” when we pray in harmony with who God is, what he desires, and what he communicates in the Bible.

God’s “general will” is revealed to you in the pages of the Bible. There you’ll see the compilation of his teachings, values, commands, and priorities. It’s his story and it helps you know and understand what’s important to him.

God’s general will applies to all of us – mankind in general. He also has a specific will that’s his unique plan for your life – and yours alone.

Prayers God Can’t Answer

I know (and God knows) there are many things you may want, many things that you think you need, and many things you may want to see happen in this world or in your relationships.

God cherishes you but he can’t contradict himself anymore than you could be a rock, or a dog could be a cat.

  • He can’t give you things that go against what he believes in or what he stands for
  • He can’t give you things that go against his nature and what he desires for you.
  • He can’t give you things that aren’t the best things for you in the long run. His ways are perfect.

The better we know scripture, the more we’ll understand God’s priorities. When we understand what’s important to God, we’ll focus less on what’s important to us. Then we’ll begin to see God demonstrate himself through answered prayers.

As 1 John 5:14 says, there’s confidence that comes when you pray according to God’s will. There is also peace, comfort, and intimacy.

I’m thankful for you and appreciate you coming by. I know there are many places you can choose to spend your time – and I am so grateful you’ve chosen to share your day with me. It’s always a joy to have friends fill this place. Feel free to leave a comment and share your thoughts. I’d love to hear them.

Lisa, loved today’s article about praying according to God’s will. I’ve been getting some “no’s” and “not right now” from God recently about specific prayers. So, I especially connected when you wrote:

“God cherishes you but He can’t contradict Himself…He can’t give you things that go against his nature and what he desires for you. He can’t give you things that aren’t the best things for you in the long run. His ways are perfect.”

    Thanks for the reminder!
