Satisfaction of the Deepest Yearnings of the Heart

Print Friendly

Christmas, Advent, Spirituality, Faith

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:1-8

What is your heart longing for this Christmas? Are you thirsting for the presence of God?

A presence that imbues the inmost wrinkles in tired souls.

A presence that holds, cradles, inspires, uplifts, delights.

A presence that causes the heart to take flight.

A presence that gratifies the deepest yearnings completely and totally.

A presence, once tasted, that creates a hunger for more.

A presence that not only came to be in our midst at the birth of Christ, but a presence internalized intimately within the heart-center of each one who chooses to follow him.

Never leaving, never abandoning, never running away.

The presence with Joseph in the stench of injustice, the blackness of abandonment, and the agony of betrayal.

And it was enough. God was with him.

And Joseph realized the truest blessing of life. God with us.

A presence once reserved for God’s chosen people of Israel.

A presence bursting into the reality of every person at the entrance of a holy God onto a degenerate planet.

A mystery to you and me. A God who shares the very best with people who are so undeserving of so glorious and beautiful a gift. A perfect gift.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Oh the indescribable goodness and love of a God – the God – who could no longer endure the separation between us.

The God who chose to eliminate the distance . . . to be with us.

To walk the path of struggle, pain, and weariness . . . enduring the life of humanity filled with the consequences of rebellion.

Human lives aching for reconciliation with the Creator and lover of our souls.

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:22-2

He’s right here! Every moment. Every day. Every breath. And the resplendent celebration of his birth is coming.

Advent . . . a time of waiting for the celebration of the birth of our precious Savior.

Celebration inaugurated by preparation of the soil of the heart.

Creating a holy space in unholy hearts.

Embracing a longing . . . a yearning for his matchless and incomparable presence.

A holy hunger for a perfect God whose presence swaddles the lowly and outcast with shameless love.

The secret to true satisfaction . . . cherishing his presence with us above all else.

May my desire – our desire – for him be greater than any other desire.

An unfiltered, unfettered, abandoned longing for his presence to fill every corner of our lives.

Adoring the one true God who steals my breath the way no one else can . . .

    I love this quote Lisa – “Human lives aching for reconciliation with the Creator and lover of our souls.” We all have that ache, some of us sense it more readily, others deny it altogether. But it’s there. My prayer for you and yours this season is that your particular version of that ache will be filled to a greater capacity as you worship, celebrate, and wonder. Blessings my sister.

  2. “Embracing a longing . . . a yearning for his matchless and incomparable presence.” — this line describes me, my present need. Thanks Ma, for this post. May God satisfy your yearnings and greatest heart desire this season and beyond. Compliments of the Season.
    Please I’m Reblogging this post on my blog. Thank you.
    Blessings,
