Praying Blessings Over Your Children

Speaking Blessings Over Children

What do you leave your kids with at the end of the day? What do you want them to be thinking about as they snuggle into the covers? The events of the day? Or something better?

When our children were young, they begged us to tell “The Balloon Story” every night before turning the lights off a bedtime. This story captured the memories from a recent vacation to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our kids loved hearing their names in the story and reliving some of the fun experiences from the trip.

The ritual of retelling that story night after night gave them comfort and security. It also fortified our family’s identity and unity.

Tucking kids in bed at night – no matter the age – is a sweet time and a perfect opportunity to blanket our children with:

  • Our affirmation and reminders of their incredible value despite what the “world” might have communicated to them that day.

  • Verbal confessions of our love and acceptance of them for who they are.

  • Demonstrations of our love through appropriate human touch.

  • Our prayers.

How about also wrapping them in a scriptural blessing?

Speaking a blessing over your children nurtures security, confidence, and hope for the future in their young hearts and minds.

In Numbers 6:24-26, God instructed Moses to speak a blessing over the children of Israel. If God believed it was good for the children of Israel, it is certainly good for your children too.

Your children need your blessing. No matter who they are, they face loads of challenges, pressures, and temptations at school and in daily life – especially in the teen years! Sometimes our kids feel like they’re being put down, torn down, discouraged, and demeaned by those around them. Their identity is forming, they’re uncertain about their worth in comparison with their peers, and self-esteem often takes a nasty hit.

In a world where there’s growing hostility to God and his ways, our kids can be pressured and persecuted for following Christ. Satan feeds on that. He works overtime to draw them away from a life lived in tight relationship with Jesus.

We can combat those things by making our homes a sanctuary. Surrounding kids with encouragement and love within the family unit helps them thrive and maneuver life with confidence.

Praying blessings over your children at the end of the day reinforces not only your love, but God the Father’s love and good intentions for them as well.

I love the idea of a child drifting off to sleep with truths from God’s word ringing in their ears. What a wonderful way to refute the negativity, lies, and damage they experience in the world at large.

Praying scripture is the greatest offensive weapon we have against Satan’s attacks on our children. It’s the greatest way to protect them.

Blessings to Pray Over Your Children

Intensify the impact of these prayers by laying your hand on your child’s head or shoulder while you pour the blessing out.

  • “(Name of child), may the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
  • “(Name of child), may the Lord keep you from all harm as you trust in Him. May he watch over your life, your coming and your going, both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7-8
  • (Name of child), God, the Father is constantly transforming you into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. I can see his characteristics developing in you in these ways . . . (Verbalize the characteristics you see). (Name of child), may you always reflect the Lord’s glory. I believe you will.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
  • “For what is my hope, my joy, and my crown in which I will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you, (name of child)? (Name of child), indeed, you are my glory and joy.” 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
  • “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of God, the Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Name of child), you are precious and worth more than many sparrows. May you never be afraid. God will always care for you.” Matthew 10:29-31
  • “May God make all grace abound to you, (name of child), so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

How do you tuck your kids into bed at the end of the day?

Until next time . . .
