After the Grammy Awards . . . Same Love

Print Friendly

Did you see the Grammy awards the other night? How about the wedding ceremony conducted by Queen Latifah?

Queen Latifah started with, “We’re gathered to celebrate love and harmony.” Then she led the union of 33 marriages – some heterosexual, many same-sex.

Before the wedding ceremony, Macklemore sang “Same Love” in front of a make-shift chapel on stage.

I respect his passion. He’s obviously had experiences in his life – and people he loves – who have been damaged by judgment. I can’t fault him for that.

However . . . because God was grievously misrepresented, I’d like to clarify some things today.

Born That Way

Macklemore sang:

“The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision and you can be cured with some treatment and religion. Man-made rewiring of a predisposition. Playing God . . . and God loves all his children, is somehow forgotten.’

Truth:

  • Whether we lead a homosexual lifestyle or not, we’re all born with a predisposition to rebel against God. It’s called a “sin nature.”
  • Sin is lawlessness and moral failure to keep a command; missing the mark of God’s perfection; and any act contrary to the Law and will of God. (James 4:17, 1 John 3:4, 1 John 5:17, Romans 14:23)
  • True Christianity isn’t about man-made rewiring. It’s about God-made rewiring. Without God we’re all helpless to overcome the power of sin in our lives. Right-wing conservatives should know this.
  • God loves all his CREATION, but not everyone is considered his “CHILD.” Only those who have owned their sin, recognized their need for a Savior, and surrendered their hearts and lives to Jesus are adopted into God’s family as his CHILDREN.

Those who have not done this are not his “CHILDREN.” They are his CREATION. There’s a difference.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. Romans 8:14-16

  • God gives his children a new heart, a new nature (his nature), and a new spirit (his spirit). His Spirit gives us the desire and ability to live in a way that glorifies and pleases God. Therefore, God’s true children no longer walk by the flesh indulging the sinful desires of the flesh. They walk by his Spirit.

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Reliability of the Bible

Macklemore:

“But we paraphrase a book written 3500 years ago.”

Truth:

I’ve received formal Biblical training and studied the Bible for many years. I can honestly tell you when it comes to marriage there’s no paraphrasing. God is clear.

And that book – the Bible – was written over a period of 1500 years by 40 authors on three different continents in three different languages. All of their writings are in harmony theologically! God made sure the men who wrote down his revelations did so without error.

“All scripture is God-breathed.” 2 Timothy 3:16

Because of its accuracy, the Bible is used more than any other source for archaeological digs. No archaeological finding has ever contradicted scripture.

Moral Standards

Macklemore:

“It’s human rights for everybody, there is no difference! Live on and be yourself.”

This reminds me of the book of Judges where it says, “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

There were no standards among God’s people. This led to societal chaos and an outpouring of God’s judgment on his people.

Rather than living to ourselves, God wants us to live to him with our whole hearts.

(Galatians 2:202 Corinthians 5:15

His plan is for his true children to live differently as they live in complete surrender to his spirit. Philippians 2:14-161 Peter 2:9-12Romans 12:1-2; 2 Timothy 1:9)

Love, Compassion, and Truth

Macklemore:
“When I was at church they taught me something else. If you preach hate at the service those words aren’t anointed. That holy water that you soak in has been poisoned.”

Agreed. God commands us to love as he loves. There’s a huge need for Christians to demonstrate compassion and kindness without throwing out God’s standards for living.

Compassion and the True Meaning of Tolerance

Equality, Freedom, and Marriage

Macklemore:

“When everyone else is more comfortable remaining voiceless. Rather than fighting for humans that have had their rights stolen. I might not be the same, but that’s not important. No freedom till we’re equal, damn right I support it.”

  • Equality doesn’t bring freedom. Jesus does.
  • With Jesus, we don’t receive freedom TO sin. We receive freedom FROM the power of sin and its consequences.

People say they don’t want anything to do with God because they want the freedom to live as they please. God says there is no such thing. We’re all living under one ruler or another – either Satan or God. (Ephesians 2:1-10Ephesians 6:12)

“You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.” Eph 2:2-3

Through the physical shedding of Christ’s blood on the cross, our bondage to sin and its consequences is broken. God accepted Christ’s sacrifice because Jesus was perfect in every way. He alone perfectly obeyed all God the Father’s commands. Our penalty was removed. We’re forgiven and no longer held captive by the law. We live as new creations by the power of his spirit living within us. (Romans 6:1-11)

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature . . .” Galatians 5:13

“So I (Paul) say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.” Galatians 5:14

The message of Christianity is this:

We are held captive by the cravings of our sinful nature, dead in our sins, and in bondage to the consequence of death. God frees us from bondage and makes us alive in Christ.

That is real freedom.

Living the Gospel vs. Preaching the Gospel

If the downhill slide of morality in America bothers you and stresses you out, consider this:

Barna Group studies have shown with stark clarity that the behavior of professing Christians is no different than the behavior of non-Christians – with few exceptions.

It seems like the best place to start changing the world is with ourselves.

Instead of focusing on preaching the gospel, how about we start living the gospel in grateful response to all Jesus has done for us?

Jesus sacrificed all to save, redeem, and free the most degenerate. We all fit that category.

So fabulously written Lisa! I just shared and I hope this post spreads like wildfire! It’s just perfect.

Good post, Lisa. I feel bad for Macklemore and his fans. Perhaps they were turned off by the church at some point due to a “hatred” message. This topic is not at all about hatred or human rights. From what I’ve read, he desperately seeks acceptance and respect, and seems to be striving to find it in many different ways. None of which are getting him to his goal. Macklemore claims to believe in Vipassana, or an atheist model. For him, “God” is not a being but a way for an individual to realize faith and happiness. He claims to have come to this realization through hip-hop music. It might be time for him to turn to the Bible and Christ to find some answers that he’s not finding on his own accord. I only wish he would before he leads a generation confused and astray.

Thanks Jeff! I didn’t know this about Macklemore. I agree with you . . . his influence over an entire generation concerns me too. Not to mention the irresponsibility of our entertainment industry. Today, parents in our culture have to be so intentional with their kids. Appreciate your comment.
