Answering Evil with Good

Print Friendly

Sharing God’s goodness with orphans in Africa

First the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, then the Wisconsin Sikh temple, and this week another shooting in College Station. My daughter has a friend whose mother was in College Station that day to help her move in. She was shot twice in her daughter’s driveway. When the world goes crazy, how do you feel? Dejected? Defeated? Fed up? Overwhelmed? Angry? Here are some good things God’s been reminding me of in recent weeks:

There’s Still Good in This World

That’s a fact. When you put your faith in Christ, our God who is infinitely good begins planting his nature smack dab in the middle of you. So you and I and all other believers are carrying the treasure of God’s goodness around inside of us.

God wants that goodness to work its way out into the world through good deeds and good living.

Taking “good” to Joplin in aftermath of tornado

He gave himself “to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” (Titus 2:14)

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works . . . Ephesians 2:10

Good Overcomes Evil

What good is it to answer evil with evil? There is only more evil. In Romans 12:21, God encourages us to overcome evil with good.

God vanquished Satan’s evil agenda with good when he sent his precious son to suffer and die for us. The result? God’s love, mercy, and compassion flowing out of his moral goodness overcame evil and changed the world.

“Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong . . . trust in the Lord and do good.” Psalm 37:1, 3

So for those who’ve caused overwhelming devastation in our world . . . for those who’ve stolen innocence . . . for those who have violated the vulnerable . . . for those who’ve abused and abandoned . . . for every lie, every betrayal, every fraudulent action. Overshadow those evils with the good God has planted in you – and the world will be changed immediately.

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

Believe in God’s Goodness and Keep Your Eyes On It

In the middle of the madness, keep your eyes on good by keeping your eyes on the One who is good.

Yes – God is good. His goodness never wears out like your favorite pair of jeans – and never runs out like the discontinued shade of your favorite lipstick.

“For the Lord is always good. He is always loving and kind, and his faithfulness goes on and on to each succeeding generation.” Psalm 100:5 (TLB)

God is always working for our good. When we trust him, he has the ability to take the greatest tragedy and bring something positive out of it. Usually, it’s something good in us as he strengthens our character and transforms us into his likeness.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Remember That Good Wins Out in the End!

Never forget this. Jesus came the first time to find and rescue sinners. He will come back to judge/punish evil and rule as King. (See Revelation 20:10)

Don’t be defeated. Don’t give up. Evil exists but you can stand up, rise up, and squelch it’s voice by practicing good deeds and living a godly life.

Do you believe God is good? Do you believe good deeds really make a difference in a world where evil is prevalent? What would the world look like if we blanketed it with an act of kindness every time we heard of an act of evil?

With great confidence in the character of God . . .
