Ah Comfort Food! Soul-Satisfying Chili
Hello friend! Come on in and kick your shoes off. Today we’re going to make a pot of delicious chili to warm your bones.
I love the return of Fall and all things cozy. Pots of soup are one of those cozy little things I love. Here’s my recipe for Soul-Satisfying Chili. I started with my sister-in-law’s recipe and added my own soul-satisfying ingredients. It’s a little spicy – but oh so good!
3 pounds hamburger
1 medium onion-chopped
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 Tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
3 Tablespoons chili powder
1/2 Tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon ground white pepper
1 teaspoon ground red pepper
1 Tablespoon cumin powder
4 shakes crushed red pepper
1 ounce unsweetened baking chocolate
2 cups water
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup red cooking wine
1 large can diced tomatoes (plain – not seasoned)
1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 can dark red kidney beans
1 can black beans
Add-in options:
Fritos
Oyster crackers
Sour cream
Grated cheddar cheese
Cook meat well. Add onion and garlic. Cook until onion is tender. Add all spices, chocolate, water, sugar, and wine. Simmer over low heat for 30 minutes minimum. The longer you simmer, the better. When you’re ready to eat, add the cans of tomatoes and beans. Stir together and heat until beans and tomatoes are warmed. Serve with add-ins.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you again soon! I’ll leave the porch light on for you!
i definitely want to try this but the hubbie will not eat ANYTHING with chocolate in it… and suggestions for a substitute?!?! this rain makes me want chili and this recipe looks delicious!
Hi Erika! The chocolate helps balance the spicyness. Honestly, you can’t taste it in the recipe so your husband probably won’t even notice its presence. 🙂 If you remove the chocolate, just use a little less of the other spices – chili powder, white pepper, red pepper, and maybe just a couple of shakes of the crushed red pepper flakes. Hope that helps. Let me know how you like it.
thanks lisa! i told him i would never sneak chocolate into anything i make so i’m gonna have to just remove and adjust the spices! thanks for the suggestion- i’m sure we will all love it!
Such a good wife! 🙂
I’m so gonna try it this weekend.
Great! Hope you enjoy it!
Yum looks so tasty.
