Hello Brave Mommas! Summer is camp time. Last weekend my husband and I had the opportunity to stay overnight as guests at a high-energy Christian sports camp. We were there on changeover day. The counselors and staff were noticeably drained from non-stop schedules, high demands, and persistent 100+ degree heat. The amount of free time they had between the end of one term and the beginning of the next? 1 1/2 hours.
At 2:00 there was a huge uproar outside our room. I peeked through the shades to see a great celebration. New campers were waiting at the gate. With raucous cheering and shouting to celebrate their arrival, the staff was running full sprint all the way down the road to the gates in the heat of the day. Gates were opened and campers were welcomed with huge fanfare into “the happiest place on earth” – Kanakuk Kamps. The staff then turned their weary bodies around and ran full-out all the way back into camp – still screaming and yelling. It literally brought tears to my eyes to watch them set aside their exhaustion to make those campers feel so loved.
Their selflessness inspired me. I shared this with my son (a camp counselor). He simply said, “It’s worth it. For the kids. For the Kingdom.”
Everyday, I see mommas doing the same thing – setting aside their weariness for their kids. We all know motherhood is rewarding, but it can also be really challenging. It can sometimes feel futile. How many times do we have to repeat the same instruction to our kids? Do they even hear what we’re saying? Will they ever get it? But we stand behind our commitment to them. “For the kids.”
I’ve been a mother for 22+ years. I can tell you without hesitation that motherhood is one of the highest callings in life. It ranks right up there above the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation. You see, there is a lot more going on as you love on, teach, and nurture your “babies” than you realize. Your sweet (and sometimes not so sweet) ones are future world changers and influencers.
God has entrusted your children to you. When you raise them in homes of faith, teach them about God, and point them to Christ you are sowing the seeds of God’s kingdom in the fertile soil of their little hearts. Your role in their lives is critical. Your impact in their lives can’t be measured. Parenting is worth every ounce of sweat, every tear, and every heart-wrenching prayer.
For the kids. For the kingdom. I think that’s a beautiful mission for every mom. Puts things in perspective.
While we were at camp, I overheard our son tell the camp Director that there comes a point each day when he’s so tired he doesn’t know how he’ll find the energy to go on. I know you can relate! He went on to say that God always gives him enough strength for the day. I pray the same for you wherever you are today – and everyday.
Do you understand the importance of your role as a mom? How do you parent “for the kingdom?”
